Throwback Thursday: Spring/Summer 2014

After seeing countless images of men’s fashion week overseas, I surely am looking forward to fashion week in NYC. Last season, I had the pleasure to work for Michael Bastian’s lovely Spring/Summer 2014 collection. While working backstage, I captured the models getting primped, polished & ready for the show. In the mist of Throwback Thursday, I have posted the video that I made capturing moments from that day.

Below is the video of the actual show.

Thoughts On: Yung Lean

If you like Lil’ B & Max B, then you’ll love Yung Lean.

Young Lean for many, may be an acquired taste. The 16-year old Swedish rapper and his crew called the ‘SADBOYS’, embrace their emotions through their music. They relate to feeling Sad. I know…LOL. We have a dude rapping about being sad, which is ironic and funny. Traditionally, Hip-Hop is about maintaining a tough & strong image. However, Yung Lean’s expression of sadness is his strength.

Yung Lean hails from Stockholm, Sweden. He raps about being emotional, drugs, violence, Arizona Iced Tea & other miscellaneous things. In an interview he had with NOISEY, he named his favorite rappers which included Future, Lil Boosie and Max B, to name a few. But how did he find about Max B while in Sweden? Well, here we see how the internet has given Yung Lean, access to various artist despite his geographic origin. Our location no longer dictates what we listen to.

Similar to Lil’ B, people either love him or not. It’s almost cool to like Yung Lean. He’s is a rapper that rises from the underground inter-webs and has gained a strong following. Yet, you are never sure whether his fans respect him as a rapper or if they are just plain trolling.

KSW x CIDNINJA

CIDNINJA is a very unique artist. Her ability to sing over various genres of music, makes her voice very refreshing to hear. Each song she creates is recollection/reflection of her life experiences of becoming & maturing. With every project CIDNINJA takes on, she evolves and becomes a more refined version of herself.. I sincerely believe that CIDNINJA has great potential. She sounds like the future.

NWK | Leather Weather

Leather Weather runs off my tongue with ease as this term was commonly used throughout my high school. When I attended Manhattan Center for Science & Math HS (’03-’07) leather jackets were huge. Walking through the hallways of high school, I remember seeing the Pelle Pelle, the Avirex, the Vanson motorcycle jackets and of course a hood classic, the leather bomber jacket with intricate leather stitching…which to this day, I still wish to cop.

However, Leather Weather was ideal. When the weather got cold, a leather jacket could barely keep you warm. Leather Weather to me was, wearing a leather jacket without having a Goldilocks complex in regards to the temperature.

Now back to the present day. Mellany Sanchez Leather Weather

Mellany Sanchez is well versed in leather. She has refined the term “Leather Weather” and has coined it her own. Her style provokes me to think differently. The combination of all black and neutrals can easily get boring but, she manages to always make it look fresh with her own twist. By adding the element of leather to her outfits and rocking kicks or Timbs as footwear, she attributes a sporty-chic minimalistic look to the term “Leather Weather”.

New Wave Kitten

In such a male dominated world, we rarely see a female’s presence or perspective.

Last summer, I was very disappointed to see that there were no women in COMPLEX’s list of,  “The 50 Most Stylish New Yorkers Right Now”Although it was a nice gesture for COMPLEX to ask Downtown’s Sweetheart, Vashtie Kola for her top female list, it still felt like a weak response to their lack of female presence on their first post.  I respect Vashtie’s list but I found it to be very personalized and difficult to relate to the women who were listed.

You rarely come across a list where men interpret or express their thoughts on women with impressive yet comparable style to men. I would have rather appreciated a list that integrated both women and men, from COMPLEX’s perspective.

After realizing that I could not relate to either lists, it made me think about my generation.  I contemplated with myself thinking about which young ladies I find to be doing their thing in the world and leaving their mark in style.
